Bwin desktop website (until 2006 – Betandwin) was founded in Austria in 1997 with 12 employees. A year later the company opened its first website with sports betting. An important milestone in its development was the launch of live betting, which was an internal development of the company. In 2000, this bookmaker’s office carried out the most successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the history of the Austrian Stock Exchange, earning 55 million euros.
In June 2001 Betandwin acquired the Gibraltar company Simon Bold (future Bwin International Ltd) and started operating from Gibraltar. This step followed several major competitors in the international betting market. The same year the company launched an online casino.
In November 2004, Betandwin entered the online poker market. In 2006, the company name was changed to Bwin for marketing reasons. In 2007, the clients of the betting office were able to watch sports broadcasts on the website.
On 8 June 2010, Bwin became the first online gambling company to be licensed in France. Even earlier, in 2009, the company entered the Italian online poker market by acquiring Gioco Digitale, the oldest local gambling website, for €50 million in cash and 2.3 million of its own shares.
